How to crochet a red heart for Valentine’s day.

It is almost Valentine’s day. That’s why I made a diagram of a heart, made with my new handy pattern tool, a tool made to make a pattern more readable regardless of the language! There is also another pattern made with this tool, also a very easy to crochet rose.

The following diagram is so simple to read that the heart becomes easy to make and you are going to love this kind of patterns!

Like in my post of a rose, I hope the drawing is clear enough so that an explanation is not required. But of course there is an explanation further on! If you want a better overview just click on the diagram to see on one page a complete presentation of the diagram.

I think that even with this simple pattern you can already properly detect the benefits of the diagram. First, there are mainly 5 branches in the drawing, each representing a tour. Each branch starts with a thick arrow and you can easily follow each branch with the direction of the thinner arrows. Second, you immediately see how often you have to repeat a stitch. You don’t have to count on the pattern yourself.

A side note: I am certainly not saying that patterns fully drawn with all the necessary stitches are bad, not at all, I think that both representations can also perfectly complement each other. With the new diagram you immediately see what you have to do, with such a drawing you immediately see the shape you need to achieve.

Explanation

Each tour is divided into 3 different colors to represent the 3 parts of a heart, the right wing, the point and the left wing. The colors in both views are almost the same, making it easier to compare.

The well-known American notations are used. If you need a translation, refer to this table to convert the notations used.

Start with a magical ring

Tour 1

• crochet 8 single crochets in the ring

Close with a slip stitch

Tour 2

• start with 2 chains counting as the first double crochet and a double crochet in the first stitch
• crochet 2 double crochets in each single crochet of the first tour

Close the tour with a slip stitch

Tour 3 :

First wing

• start with a single crochet
• a half double crochet  and a double crochet in the next stitch
• two double crochets in the same next stitch
• two double crochets in the same next stitch
• two double crochets in the same next stitch

Point

• a double crochet
• a double crochet
• a double crochet and a triple crochet in the next stitch
• a triple crochet and a double crochet in the next stitch
• a double crochet
• a double crochet

Second wing

• two double crochets in the same next stitch
• two double crochets in the same next stitch
• two double crochets in the same next stitch
• a double crochet  and a half double crochet in the next stitch
• end with a single crochet

Close the tour with a slip stitch

Tour 4

First wing

• start with a single crochet
• 2 half double crochets in same stitch
• half double crochet and double crochet in the same stitch
• 2 double crochets in same stitch
• 2 double crochets in same stitch
• 1 half double crochet

Point

• 6 single crochets in the next 6 stitches
• double crochet and triple crochet in the next same stitch
• triple crochet and double crochet in the next same stitch
• 6 single crochets in the next 6 stitches

Second wing

• 1 half double crochet
• 2 double crochets in same stitch
• 2 double crochets in same stitch
• double crochet and half double crochet in same stitch
• 2 half double crochets in same stitch
• end with a single crochet

Close the tour with a slip stitch

Tour 5 and final tour

First wing

• start with two single crochets in the first two stitches
• two half double crochets in the next two stitches
• a double crochet in the next stitch
• two double crochets in the next same stitch
• two double crochets in the next same stitch

Point

• 10 double crochets in the next 10 stitches
• double crochet and a triple crochet in the next same stitch
• triple crochet and double crochet in the next same stitch
• 10 double crochets in the next 10 stitches

Second wing

• two double crochets in the next same stitch
• two double crochets in the next same stitch
• a double crochet in the next stitch
• two half double crochets in the next 2 stitches
• two single crochets in the next 2 stitches

Close this tour with a slip stitch.

As you see, the explanation is really long because I used various stitches in various ways so some tours are made of a variety of stitches.– I hope you didn’t need this, 🙂 just because my new pattern tool is brilliant!– But anyway, it can always be used to be sure!

A garland of hearts as an example of what you can make with these hearts! 

Start wit 10 chains en close it as a ring. Crochet again 10 chains and hook a first heart on it with a single crochet. Crochet 20 chains and again hook the next heart wit a single crochet on the garland. Add as many hearts as you wish to the garland!
